Plans changed
7 januari 2019 - Apple Valley, California, Verenigde Staten
First of all, I hope you all had a happy Holiday!
Vacation with Peter Peter and me had a great time for Christmas at Topanga Canyon with Lotte and Ryan and at Huntington beach with Peters cousin and his family. Then we went to Coronado Island, in San Diego, where we enjoyed each others company (after 2 months no see!), the weather, biking, walking along the ocean, just having vacation. Lotte and Ryan came over for celebrating new years eve by playing party games and usher in the new year with bubbles on the beach. Actually, it's not allowed to drink alcohol on the street, so we took a big sip and got rid of it as quick as possible;)
January 1st 2019 The new year didn't start well.... Peter was about to spend 3 days with his cousin for a trip to Las Vegas, because I needed to go to school again. We would meet each other on Friday, for the weekend until he had to fly back. They started their trip by riding "off the road motorcycles" in the desert. ..Which ended up for Peter in hospital. With a broken shin and fibula, both bad broken so he needed surgery for putting pins in the bones. Besides this, he had 11 ribs broken, some even broken twice.. He was hospitalized in San Bernardino, over 100 miles from my home. I had to wait until the next day to rent a car and drive to him. But although the injuries have a big impact, we are so glad that he survived this accident and without permanent injury! The surgery went well and all bones will be healed. But it' ll take a long time.
Changed the plan We are lucky for having so lovely relatives close by. Peter's aunt lives in Apple Valley, 1 hour drive from the hospital. Also his other cousin lives close and they help wherever they can. Aunt's house is all ground floor and provided with every medical equipment he needs. Like a hospital bed, a walker, a wheelchair, mobile toilet etc. The hospital discharged him Friday evening and drove him, (laying on a bed) to aunt Willy's home. Where she and I were waiting for our patient. (12.15 am ...) Since Peter is totally dependent at the moment and needs my help the coming months, I had to cancel my course. I moved out of my room, to stay with Peter and aunt Willy and took up my new calling: a nurse... again a new experience;)
What's next? Peter can't travel the first weeks, so we 'll stay here. We gonna ask for a physical therapist at home. Medical care here is a bit different from our country. Because you have to pay for every single band aid, you have to ask for care. They don't give you aftercare, only pills and when you need to let take off the stitches. So we can't say how long the rehab will last, but seeing Peter, the high level of pain by every movement, he will need months. If he is able to travel, I 'll join him back to the Netherlands, he still 'll need help.
Hopefully my cancellation will be handled as a "medical leave" which can give me the opportunity to come back later this year and take up my classes again. I 'll hear more this week.
My writing is not very inspiring this time, I have too much on my mind but I'm totally fine with my new role. Family and relationships are much more important in life than career or self development. I'm glad we can do this together, supported by our kids, family and other precious people around us.
(Photo's will be added later).
I'll come back with a new blog, to keep you updated. Unfortunately my English practice is put on the back burner, as aunt and cousin do speak Dutch... But at the other hand, in this situation it's more comfortable.
Ik hoop ( denk het wel ) dat je een goede " verpleegster" bent.
Heel veel sterkte ! Denk aan jullie. liefs.
